In an increasingly fast-paced world, the concept of “slow travel” offers a refreshing alternative, especially when exploring a destination as rich and diverse as Kenya. This approach encourages a deliberate, unhurried pace, allowing you to truly immerse into the culture, connect with the people, discover the wildlife, and savor every moment of their adventure. It’s about trading the whirlwind of a typical tourist itinerary for a more profound and meaningful experience.
People often remark about the incredible things they discover while traveling. Yet, sometimes, just getting out the door proves difficult.
Early last year a client was introduced to us through the recommendation of a travel agent. This woman had discovered that over the years she had sequestered herself away from people, events and challenging herself. She had never ventured out of the country and without a destination in mind, sought a vacation to shake off the shackles of her limited life. She acknowledged although she had lived on the same cul de sac for years, she had yet to meet any of her neighbors. Her world felt as though it was getting smaller and she knew it was time for a change. The New Year was an ideal time for a resolution. Her agent suggested a journey with SKYIN might be just the thing to shed the old and welcome the new – it was time for an adventure.
When I first realized my passion for creating a business which provided authentic journeys across Kenya, I had strong ideas of what I thought that should look like. Immersive day-long experiences with indigenous tribes, vetted homestays, thoughtful and impactful safari excursions, all had to resonate with something more… they had to be honest and transformative. Establishing the foundation for these pillars of my company proved enriching yet intense, but I was resolved to offer travelers an opportunity to engage actually into and with the people of Kenya as I had growing up. In my mind, by providing this, it would dramatically aid colleagues, friends and communities in my African “homeland” with a sustainable livelihood and ensure long term growth opportunity.
When the last of the suitcases have been unpacked and the routine of everyday life begins again, images of foreign adventures dance through one’s mind and the rich experiences fill one’s daydreams. These memories are cherished and recently, one guest, Josh Coefield, had an opportunity to share his reflections regarding his journey with SKYIN. Like most of you, we enjoy “people watching” at the airport. We sometimes find ourselves wondering where they’re going, luggage towed behind them haphazardly or draped over their shoulders as they press on to their gates. The joy expressed by those destined for non-business travel is easily visible, faces brimming with anticipation.
